Popeye the Sailor Man If it's one thing that seems to be popular in movies, it's animated characters with super-strength. One of the earliest examples was Popeye, who first appeared in a series of comic strips by cartoonist E.C Segar back in 1929. In 1933, Segar and his staff converted those comic strips into a silent short film called "Popeye". It was released as a theatrical feature-length film in 1933, and it became so popular that he decided to make another three sequels: 1935's "The Gilded Cage", 1937's "The Spin ach Pirates" and "Hold Me Tight!" in 1938. All four films were directed by Segar. In his comic strips, Segar used the character Olive Oyl to stand in for a variety of women. In the movies, however, Olive Oyl was portrayed as an independent woman who helps Popeye overcome obstacles with her intelligence and strength. The first film's script also mentions that she is the niece of a wealthy magnate named King Prawn whom Popeye has already beaten up once before. This was changed to a king in later films because Prawn became an established character from then on and because it was a more plausible explanation for why she was in Popeye's care and not her uncle's.in later films because Prawn became an established character from then on and because it was a more plausible explanation for why she was in Popeye's care and not her uncle's. In the second film, after rescuing the girl, Olive makes it quite clear that "I don't know anything about being a kid". The third film reveals this to be untrue with some evidence toward the end of the third act where Olive is seen wearing baby clothes (presumably after entrusting them to someone).
